Chicago Tribune Putin editorial is both wishful thinking and dangerous denial
Its title is long and hyperbolic: ‘Putin talks menacingly of nukes. These are desperate threats from a despot on the ropes.’
Claiming Ukraine’s determination to resist has led to “victory after victory on the battlefield” is delusional. In 213 days, Ukraine launched one counteroffensive, regaining about 2% of the 20% of conquered territory, while sacrificing 5,000 soldiers in their faint to the south to retake Kharkiv.
The Trib is in denial that Ukraine is now an economically and militarily failed state, utterly dependent on endless US and NATO billions just to function. How endless? Over $60 billion so far on way to a hundred billion by year end. Will our proxy war against Russia using only Ukrainians as cannon fodder be America’s next trillion dollar war?
The Trib is in denial that Western Europe will stick with the endless weapons regime when major recession and energy shortages may make their upcoming winter unlivable, provoking major unrest.
The Trib is in denial when it claims Putin’s invasion, tho criminal and unnecessary, wasn’t provoked by the US since 2008 when we floated eventual NATO membership to Ukraine. That provocation accelerated wildly after we helped anti-Russian Ukrainians depose Russian friendly but democratically elected Ukraine president Victor Yanukovych in 2014
The Trib’s most serious, potentially catastrophic denial, is that Putin may be bluffing when he says nuclear weapons may be used should Russia be attacked. Citing unnamed “analysts” as holding that view before offering the possibility Putin is serious, the Trib goes with the first opinion, urging endless weapons instead of sensible negotiations which could provide by Ukraine and Russia an off ramp from war. If the Trib weren’t in denial about Putin’s history, they would know he does not bluff. He didn’t in 2014 when he seized the Crimea to safeguard the Russian naval base as Sevastopol after the US supported coup. He didn’t bluff when he told the US last December that Ukraine NATO membership was an existential red line that would provoke a Russian response. Why the Trib would surmise Putin is bluffing on nuclear weapons is astounding.
We in the peace community reject endless billions for a futile proxy war getting only Ukrainians killed, fostering economic meltdown and possibly triggering nuclear war. We know only negotiations leading to a truce and peace agreement have any chance of success. Time for the Trib to get on the Peace Train instead of hitching their editorial stance to another endless US war.

Love your work Walt, it is a refreshing breeze of reality that fails in comparison to the noise of the destructive Rabbit-hole storm of societal decay, the Tempest all around us -and still, your voice gets through.
I watched the address from Italy of the warnings of bad choices in elections -that Italy has once again embraced Facism by popular vote, eyes wide open and the Swiss have a Nazi party that Finland is itself shagging off its leg at home. The world is embracing Fascism as a personal selfish survivalist solution for self preservation and it's lawlessness is beyond epidemic. It is quite clear that man's laws are left in the balance as wanting and political perfection of any fashion is openly rejected as oppression but Fascism? Fascism is embraced.
We had a dreamy Republic but the world has followed our example where lawlessness is substituted for social order. We need to participate as citizens and immigrants for it to work but those who resent the Rule of Law are actively engaged in finding ways to have only one law: To have no laws.
Russia as we knew it in the 20th century was targeted for several millenia as the biblical Gog that attacks Israel from the north but this account in Ezekiel chapter 38 is patterned after chapter 29 where a Record of Pharaoh's army is making the same
strategic move in pursuit to perform a total Genocide: both armies travel South to attack while traveling from the West. Gog is mustered to attack eastward but at some point absolute war is focused on Jerusalem: the object of Gog's Genocide has relocated and pursuit takes them South.
In all honesty, our military is following a bad script because Russia is no Confederacy of military might but Gog is. Russia is hardly a confederacy of states and has few global friends: from the current social state of decay in Russia it is a real leap of imagination for them to become a military Confederacy of many nations, ten to be sure. The Diplomacy left the room long ago when our nation betrayed peaceful accords like those we held with the U.S.S.R. on Star Wars, the weaponized space platform we built in contempt.
They designed and built several generations of Hypersonic missiles which our technology cannot defeat: when dispensed at altitudes they can glide almost forever and can be deployed within Russia's borders. Zooming us in our air is just for fun now: they wrote a new playbook.
The undercurrents of the anarchists still intend to seat Trump in a national emergency in a Western White House. The hope of those faithful is in a reconstruction war economy for which Trump declares he was our President of, our Messiah and Savior as our War President: the Chosen One.
You just cannot make this stuff up.

POLAND has become a gateway nation to the new lawless off shore investor and opportunist. Warsaw's a host for a publicly traded war game App developed in Arizona: Battleships of War (B.O.W.) A one product publicly traded company that has an App with very advanced learning AI to mill around undetected in your hardware, hijacking admin authority, manned by teams who have command of each hosted language,
including Russian.
It was a dragnet to ID hackers in many languages because hackers were permitted to hack there. The game was purchased by a strange elanor-Muskian named company that suggested a different mission statement: WHOPPER, a reference to a supercomputer that controls AI War in a movie called War Games. Poland was where Uke cyber experts were allowed to flee to as Ukrainian Military Conscripts in service. Expect Poland to be hammered and for Warsaw to be vaporized in the real war, with priority.
The Ukraine was the new Cuba for tax havens and organized crime. After being there over 30 years since the fall of the USSR, Pat Robertson has been influential in forging the Ukraine his way: Atomwaffen Nazis have emerged and infiltrated global labor groups in Europe and the USA. Pat has declared that the hooks are in Russia to attack westward and that God had informed of such which is off the scriptural script. PAT is in Israel waiting for Armageddon and was there while his wife died and was buried here.
What a guy! The 700 club is still running ads asking for $ to help old Jewish Russian women in abject poverty. Pat has no outlets in Russia but ye has 30 in the Ukraine.
Have there been any anti-war protests/marches against this war yet? Where? Is there a central clearinghouse for those who would like to organize and/or participate in such public demonstrations? I am an eighty-year old man and would like to publicly show my opposition to America's participation in this completely unnecessary war in Ukraine.
