NFL ad:
Canton, 1906, just a bunch of guys running around in a pile of mud
 

Mr. Subliminal:

Players were battering into the opposing line with arms locked in a flying wedge, resulting in 37 deaths and 296 serious injuries among just a few thousand high school and college players in 1904 and 1905

 

NFL ad:

So they introduced a few rules just to keep the peace

Mr. Subliminal:

High schools and colleges began cancelling football programs amid national outcry to stop the carnage

NFL ad:

Suddenly we had a game on our hands
Mr. Subliminal:

Teddy Roosevelt corralled top college presidents to White House meeting demanding football be made safe or abolished

NFL ad:

We swore to protect this thing we couldn't be without

 

Mr. Subliminal:

We can't let a few thousand middle age guys with brains like scrambled eggs wreck a $10 billion a year gravy train

 

NFL ad:

So we'd have it forever
