US still flirting with nuclear war with Russia over Ukraine

For the past 27 months, America’s proxy war against Russia in Ukraine has put the world at risk of nuclear war. The Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, was provoked by America and totally unnecessary.

It occurred 17 years after America first floated NATO membership to Ukraine. Sensible diplomats, political scientists and historians repeatedly argued Ukraine NATO membership, which could place nuclear weapons on Russia's doorstep, was a red line certain to provoke a Russian military response. Proposed NATO membership for Ukraine was in furtherance of America's decades long proxy war to both weaken Russia and keep them out of the European political economy. 

Ten years ago, the US expanded that proxy war by inspiring and supporting the coup that ousted Russian friendly Ukraine president Yanukovych. The resulting civil war killed thousands of Russian speaking Ukrainians in Donbas setting the tripwire for Russian invasion. The tripwire was President Biden refusing to negotiate Russia’s security concerns in November, 2021. When Ukraine troops, armed with US weapons, massed to finish off the Russian leaning Donbas, Russia attacked.

Those diplomats, political scientists and historians were sadly proved right.  But President Biden’s unhinged belief in US exceptionalism and moral superiority caused him to blunder into one of the worst foreign policy mistakes in US history. Ukraine is now a failed state, with a shattered economy, 600,000 dead soldiers and an equal number fled to neighboring countries to avoid the Russian soldier chopper.

Worse than destroying Ukraine, Biden has been flirting for all 27 months with igniting nuclear war with Russia by weaponizing Ukraine to continue fighting till the last Ukrainian soldier is dead. While Biden said on Day 1 he would not intervene with US troops because that could start nuclear war, he’s done just about everything else to keep nuclear war percolating.

He’s providing long range missiles that can reach deep into Russia, another red line that Russia warns will trigger retaliation. Biden initially prohibited such action by Ukraine, but allowed his Secretary of State Antony Blinken to proclaim their long rang use “is up to Ukraine.” Congressional hawks have joined in with a letter to Biden demanding he unleash the Ukrainians to fire at will into Russia, the consequences be damned. This is precisely what Ukraine President Zelensky has been demanding for the entire war. Zelensky also wants to the US and NATO allies to personally shoot down incoming Russian missiles, another red line of NATO intervention likely to cause retaliation.

It will only take one miscalculation, one mistake, one rogue military leader ala Gen. Jack D. Ripper to trigger the Big One.  As Bob Dylan famously sang in ‘Masters of War’, Biden and Blinken “Play with our world like it’s your little toy.” Biden and Blinken also come to mind from that same song 61 years ago:

“Like Judas of old You lie and deceive A world war can be won You want me to believe”

The American proxy war with Russia in Ukraine could be ended PDQ thru win-win negotiations. Biden and Blinken’s ‘We win, you lose’ mindset gets us closer to nuclear midnight with every tick of the clock. That, and not the demonized Chinese version, is the TicTok we need to fear.

If you only watch mainstream news, cable and network, you may not even be aware the US is enabling Israel’s grotesque genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. There’s a couple of reasons for that.

The entire commercial media has largely scrubbed reporting on genocide there. To cover it would reveal US complicity in the first major genocide of the 21st century, destroying any semblance of a livable existence for 2,300,000 Palestinians. Why expose the truth which doesn’t fit the now debunked narrative of American exceptionalism and decency round the world.

But there’s a more ghoulish reason scenes of genocide in Gaza are missing from the American version of Pravda. Israel is killing as many reporters on the ground as US 2,000 lb. bombs can obliterate. In the first 7 months of the genocide, 143 Palestinian reporters have been killed. That is more reporters than were killed in WWII and Vietnam War combined. But worse, it only includes credentialed reporters, not the many uncredited bloggers, writers and their family members killed along with them.

As in previous Israeli campaigns in Gaza, virtually all international media professionals are barred from entering Gaza to ensure Israeli crimes against the entire Palestinian people go unreported. Israel also imposes a gag order on its own journalists who might dare report the truth of its 8 month long genocide enabled by America. Just this week Israeli authorities seized Associated Press broadcasting equipment in southern Israel and blocked the outlet’s live feed of Gaza.

Turn on the endless loop of Trump trial coverage that passes for informing the American public and ponder: ‘If the genocide in Gaza is not being covered…does that mean it’s not happening?’

There is something demented in America’s foreign policy toward Ukraine. President Biden just sent his Secretary of War…make that State, Antony Blinken, all the way to Kyiv to demand Ukraine keep America’s proxy war against Russia raging in Ukraine till the eastern quarter of Ukraine becomes part of Russia, and all Ukrainian soldiers are dead.

 

 

Blinken touted how this new $2 billion will be a gift for Ukraine to buy US weapons, further enriching US arms makers while Ukraine is collapsing as a functioning state. Blinken further heralded how some of that weapons largess will be used to purchase weapons from US allies, enriching their weapons makers as well.

 

 

Besides furthering Ukraine’s ruin, Blinken essentially greenlighted Ukraine using new US weapons to attack the Russian mainland if they so wish. Such Ukraine attacks risk serious escalation that could easily spin out of control. Russia has already warned the UK that it could hit British military sites if Ukraine uses British-provided weapons to attack targets in Russia. When asked about dangerous escalation, Blinken channeled Mad Magazine’s Alfred E. Newman muttering ‘What, me worry?’

 

 

If Hollywood ever remakes the series ‘Mad Men’, it should not be about the 1950’s advertising executives of Madison Avenue. It should chronicle the 2020’s Mad Men of Pennsylvania Avenue, Biden and Blinken, leading America and the world to ruin destroying countries in Europe and the Middle East.

Now in my 80th year I ponder anew how some folks can be so morally damaged that they deny the Israeli/US genocide in Gaza.
